Again, Ransom and Tate were key members. In fact, the Agrarians ought to be termed a movement rather than a group, since they did have particular aims, and the beliefs which they fostered were far from being exclusively literary or artistic. The collection of essays which publicly founded the movement, I'll Take My Stand (1930) dealt also with history, religion, politics and economics. The concerns which Ransom and Tate explored while Agrarians had a powerful impact on all of their subsequent writings on aesthetics.

Primarily, it suggests that Lowell no longer considers the need to escape from time and is exploring ways of living within its remorselessly linear progression. So, ideally at least, the symbol transcends time. In Lord Weary's Castle Lowell has another reason for using a symbolist mode.
