Abbott. The black press received Beavers’s roles with a dichotomy of opinions. They were proud to see a black person play such a significant role in Hollywood but disappointed that this role was so degrading to black people. Beavers requested that the word nigger be removed from the script of Imitation of Life in a scene with Delilah’s daughter Peola. This scene did not make the final cut. Actress Fredi Washington plays the older Peola. During the Harlem Renaissance, Washington acted in Shuffle Along, Black Boy, and Emperor Jones, among other films.

She was a talented piano player who sang in a raspy, growling voice. She began her career performing at rent parties and buffet flats. The flats were private apartments that operated after nightclubs closed, offering alcohol, dancing, prostitutes, gambling, and rooms to which couples could go. Bentley moved on to performing in speakeasies and nightclubs. She eventually became the headline performer at a gay speakeasy, the Clam House, and later at the Ubangi Club. Bentley’s performances were bawdy and risqué.

Presided, and poet Langston Hughes read a poem he had composed for the occasion. Soon after the funeral, Hughes expressed his admiration for Bethune’s oratory ability in a letter to fellow Harlem Renaissance poet Arna Bontemps. Hughes and Bethune struck up a friendship that same year. Despite the nuances that presented challenges in the racial politics of the era, Bethune’s steadfastness in her convictions appealed to many Harlem Renaissance intellectuals.
