CLR believed that the movement of the modern world was toward integrationpolitics, art, life, love, in the modern world, all become so closely integrated that to understand one is to understand all, he wrote in a 1944 letter to Constance; and the new synthesis, for him the key to the future of humanity itself, would be forged within the United States. I often found myself pausing for a moment from the letters to glance across the desk at CLR. It was curious, probably an instinctive response to discovering something new, but I felt as though I wanted to catch a glimpse of the man whose inner life was now spread before me.
But the books themselves have slipped in and out of print, and a good deal of James's finest writing has been slow to appear, including American Civilization, written in 1950 but only recently published. 7 He was a spellbinding lecturer and orator who spoke with power and precision about Aristotle, Shakespeare, Marx, Lenin, and Charlie Chaplin to varied audiences. But these ephemeral texts and transcripts, too, have not been widely available or else have not been published at all. Born at the turn of the century (4 January 1901) in Tunapuna, Trinidad, and after having received only a few years of formal education, James began his career as a lecturer at Queen's Royal College and later at the Teachers Training College in Port of Spain.
